I saw that documentary too and have become very interested in this story. I intend to get the book now and have meantime been reading the website.

The whole saga is so sad, but when I read Woody's account, I realized what a story of courage and faith it is too.

I've not seen the special on Discovery yet, but was discussing it on another forum and wished to find out more about the tragedy. I found this website and was moved to tears at Woody's survivor story, and the small footnote about his death. He sounded like a wonderful man and his grandson (the webmaster) is rightfully proud.
Having read each page of this site, I am appalled to learn of the treatment the US Navy gave the captain of that ship.

I also watched the documentary tonight. What an amazing story.
I have the upmost respect for these men. What horror they
went through. We owe everything to men like this who fought
in World War II. I can't even imagine how the survivors must
have lived with those horrible memories of losing so many
of their fellow officers/friends. More young people should know
this history and the sacrifices these men made for us. My
heart goes out to these surviving men and their families and
to the victims families. God Bless you. I am in my 30's and want
you to know that there are people of the younger generation
who still care and will always remember men like you. I want
my children and their children to know of your story.
