Our Deep Gratitude
Permalink Closed

I just came on this forum, and was very glad to find it.  I am related to a survivor of the Indianapolis, Russell "Rusty" Brandt.  My Dad and Rusty used to work together, as finish carpenters.  Dad said Rusty only talked about his experience one time, in all the years they worked together.  Dad also said that sometimes Rusty would go "blank" and just stare into space and begin grinding his teeth.....reliving that experience again.  Dad said the only way to bring him out of it, was to slap him.  I just can't even imagine what those men went through, and it's even more difficult to imagine how they managed to remain sane.  They talk, today, about "post traumatic stress syndrome", but these men must had the ultimate case of this disorder.  Rusty was a good man, and always joking, which I would imagine was his way of coping.  The gratitude of every American goes out to all the men of the Indianapolis, those who survived and those who did not, and also to Captain McVey, who was so wrongly court martialed.  These men are all true heroes.
