Firstly, Hal, I wrote on your profile's whiteboard so please take a look at it when you get the chance.
Secondly, I know it's passed your dad's birthday but please give him a hello from someone who is new to the story of the Indy. Please let him know that there are people out there who still learn about that terrible night in July are still immensely touched and want to reach out to these brave men.
I salute your father and wish him good health!

I was happy to find this site. I have always loved anyone who has served our country and given me the freedoms I have always had; what they say about freedom not being free couldn't be more true! I have family members who served in WWII, but none in the Navy. However the story of the USS Indianapolis has touched me deeply since the first time I heard it, and not just because it was hit and sunk. My father was a college science professor, so I know the risk everyone on that ship took by having the bomb on board with how little they knew about nuclear radiation. Anyway, to those who lost people they loved (friends and family) I am so sorry and so greatful for what they have given all of us. To the families of those who survived but since have passed on please know there are so many people like me who can't even begin to thank them for fighting for us, even those who hadn't been born yet. To any survivors who are still with us I don't think thank you can cover how greatful our Country is to you, I know it is so far from enough for me to say. If there are any survivors who would be willing to become an email pen-pal with me I would love to hear more about you (not just about your time on the US Indianapolis, but about you before and now). Again I can not thank all of you enough, or fully express how much I love and honor each and every person who has or is serving our wonderful Country so that it will stay the best and free Country ever.
I want you to know how greatful I am to your father for serving our country so that I can have the freedoms I enjoy today. It is so true that freedom isn't free, and I don't think the words thank you can really express how I truly feel for your father and for everyone who has ever served our country. I know so many veterns don't feel like heros (my family members who served in WWII and Korea didn't feel they were), but I think they define what a true hero is. So, even though it isn't enough, THANK YOU.
I remember seeing a movie on this as a child. After the movie my mom told me my Grandpa's brother David Stanforth was on the Indi. That movie still haunts me to this day. Years later my Grandpa gave an interview to the local news paper about his time in WWII and a little on his brother. He never liked to talk about that time in his life. I know he knows what happened to his brother on that ship and from what I hear it wasn't a pleasant. I thank everyone on that ship who fought for us and have a heavy heart to all that survived and did not survive that ordeal. God Bless you all!
