I was shopping on Ebay recently and came upon personal items of one of the crew of the USS Indianapolis. Is anyone aware of any living family member of the following individual, Sidney Ancil Spencer? I purchased the items out of respect for this man and would like to locate a family member if possible to give these momentos to if at all possible. He is on the list of the final crew.

In my possesion is his Service Record, a signed certificate from Harry Truman to the surviving family stating in "Grateful Memory Of", his last bank deposit book, and a few photo's and other items.

If I cannot locate a family member would you reccomend I give the items to the Uss Indianapolis Museum?

Sincerely.

I do not have contact information for the family of lost at sea sailor Sidney Spencer. However, if you would like to contact the museum personnel, please contact me off the board at BullardMBullard@aol.com and I will put you in touch with them. That would most likely be the best place to entrust the items.

I am a relative of Sidney A Spencer.  Did you donate the items or still have them in your possession?

I would like a little more details on what you have and what it will cost me. We do have a lot of things from Uncle Sidney, we are very proud of him.

Hello,

There would be no charge to you. I would be glad to ship to you if you are truely a family member of Sidney.

I just would like to give these items to you. I know you must be very proud of his service, My family members are all US Navy veterans. These items should go to his remaining family members, I just hated seeing someone try to make money selling items of this significance. I paid close to $100.00, but that is irelivant to me.

The items I have all seem to have come from the estate of Gertie Jensen, his sister.

What I have is the following; His full service record from the National Archives, A rather large document memorializing his service and signed by President Harry S. Truman, a small pin with the US Navy emblem and two blue stars attached, two stamps from letters he sent to Gertie from the USS indianapoilis and USS New Orleans, both ships he was stationed on, his Bank of America bank book from California showing his pay entries from 1944-1947, one blue star flag, and one photo of Sidney in uniform.

Secondly, he must have had a brother named Andrew in the service? I have a life insurance document from Andrew made out to Gertie as beneficiary, and another window flag with two blue stars, as you know flags were hung in windows to indicate and show support for family members serving.

Regards,

Larry Rapp
