I was too young to have met Forest Gaither but I remember his name from hearing the men talk about him around my hometown of Sumner Illinois. His family said that they had been told that Forest was seen in the water after the sinking of the Indianapolis but he wasn't one of the survivors that was picked up. They had no further information as to whether he drowned or was the victim of a shark. My cousin is married to his nephew but none of his immediate family survive today. If anyone that knows a survivor that may remember anything about Forest Gaither, I could pass the information along to his nephew. Thank you in advance.

Hi Dennis,
My father was with Forest in Fire Control School in Newport, RI. He remembers him very well and has wonderful stories. My father's name is Tony Galofaro and was born in Washington, DC. He married Anita Wernz in 1944 and moved to Terre Haute, IN. They visited Forest's parents after his death. Mrs. Gaither said it was almost like Forest was coming home when they came to visit. They remember one of his brothers who picked them up at the bus station to take them to the homestead. They would be glad to speak with his nephew if he is still interested.
