Dedicated in 2000 as The National D-Day Museum and now designated by Congress as the country's official World War II Museum, this remarkable attraction illuminates the American experience during the WWII era with moving personal stories, historic artifacts and powerful interactive displays.
However, several people - including myself - have noticed upon visiting this museum in New Orleans, that there is a very obvious absence of any information about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. I had tried to address this several years ago, but as only one voice, it was difficult to get their attention.
The National World War II Museum recently unveiled its $300 million expansion and Capital Campaign plan that will quadruple the size of the existing facility over the next five years. The expanded museum will cover all of the theaters and services that played a role in World War II and create a national center for research on the war. When completed in phases between 2005 and 2009, it will be a world-class cultural attraction in New Orleans that will dramatically increase visitation and have a powerful economic impact on the city and state. It is vital that the USS Indianapolis be represented in this forum!
If you could please take a moment to send a quick email or make a brief phone call to the National World War II Museum and express your interest in seeing the story represented for generations to come to enjoy as they visit. This will be a very vital way for us to insure that the memory of the USS Indianapolis continues to live on. Just send something brief reminding them about the tragedy and its significant loss of lives and the role it played in WWII.

The National WWII Museum would like to apologize for any misunderstanding concerning the Museums presentation of the USS Indianapolis story. Originally founded as The National D-Day Museum the Museums exhibits were designed to tell the story of amphibious landings in WWII. Although the Museum is now designated by Congress as The National WWII Museum and is devoted to honoring all Americans who contributed to WWII the exhibits to accomplish this are still being designed and constructed. When complete the Museum will include the story of every American vessel that served in WWII including the USS Indianapolis. Until then the Museum will add the story of the USS Indianapolis to the existing atomic bomb time line to insure that all of our visitors are made aware of their story of courage and sacrifice. In order to meet our goal of honoring and remembering all American who served in WWII and the men of the USS Indianapolis in particular The National WWII Museum needs your help.
