It's been 10 years since the submarine USS Indianapolis (SSN-697) was decommissioned.
Does anyone know if any lobbying is being done in D.C., so as that a near-future ship in the U.S. Navy will have the name "USS Indianapolis"?
A new USS Indianapolis on the seas would do as USS Indianapolis (SSN-697) did-- assist in helping to keep the memory and legacy of USS Indianapolis (CA-35) alive.
The new LPD class ships, some put to sea already and some still under construction/in planning, bear the names of cities (New Orleans, Green Bay, New York City, etc.), but through the first 9 ships in that ship class, none have been designated "Indianapolis". Hopefully one will be, before that class of ship is completed, as I don't foresee a new class of ship bearing city names anytime in the near future.
