Sadly, we have just received the news that USS Indianapolis Survivor James Nichols has passed away this week.
May he rest in peace.
Sadly, there are now only 70 living survivors....

Mr Nichols lived in Tennessee.
I am not sure about his particular situation, but I do know that there are many survivors who have not received a penny of compensation throughout all these years from the VA. No medical care, medications, no pension, no disability - not a thing.
At the time of returning back home, they were told to just "forget about it".... which they did for the most part. But as age took its toll, it became harder and harder for them to "forget" it, not to mention, the physical toll it took on so many of them. Very sad that not at the point in their lives that they truly do need it, they are not receiving benefits.
Wish there were more that we could do to assist them, but sadly time is running out.... I know of several survivors that are muddling through the red tape of the VA trying to get assistance for YEARS to no avail.
If there is anyone that is reading this that can offer any assistance, I'd appreciate it and I would pass it on. If you would prefer to respond off the board, feel free to contact me at bullardmbullard at aol.com
