I recently met him, he told us the story of him and his buddy cleatus. clarence is a survivor who hasn't really been heard of.....he is still alive today here in my home state of florida. clarence  and cleatus were some of the unfourtante one to have to wear the kapok life jacket and float in the water. when I saw him I recieved a copy of his biography and this is something to behold

"I NOTICED OUR SHIP SOME DOSTANCE AWAY ITS STERN POINTING UP TO THE SKY, SLIPPING SLOWLEY BENEATH THE SURFACE OF THE SEA, AMIDST A WHITE FOAMY SWIRL OF SEA WATER. THEN THE "INDY" WHICH HAD BEEN MY HOME FOR SOME FOURTEEN MONTHS WAS GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN"

I received a letter from him recently. His daughter lives near me, although we haven't actually met.

Although I have never really had a relationship with him, nor really ever talk to him...the man Clarence Hershberger is my father's father...and is still living in DeLeon Springs, FL.
