Last Saturday I walked past a man wearing a USS Indianapolis cap with "Survivor" on the back. By the time I remembered why I was supposed to recognize the name, he was gone. I have a friend who specializes in recording oral histories and at least wanted to ask the survivor if he was interested in recording his story. If anyone knows who this individual is, can you ask him to contact me if he is interested?

Hmmmm.... I wonder if you saw Felton J. Outland? But he lives up near Elizabeth City, NC (Sunbury) and Silver City is quite a ways from there. I will check into who else might be near there - I'm at the Indy Rescuers reunion in Branson, MO right now so I'll ask the guys tomorrow at breakfast. Also, Jim Belcher, a survivor's son, will be here tomorrow and he knows everything about everything and everyone...
I'll let you know.

Many thanks. I hate that I didn't see him again that afternoon (and I looked) but there were hundreds and hundreds of folks. I know this will help very little, but he was fairly short, wore glasses and walked with a handmade cane.
Incidentally, both my father and father-in-law were in the USN in the Pacific during WWII.

Hi! That was probably my grandfather, Felton Outland. He visits my uncle who lives near Siler City. We live in Gates County near Elizabeth City. I can contact him for you.

Thank you for the reply, and thank your grandfather for his service. Can I assume that someone has listened to his story and written it down or recorded it for posterity? (I'm embarrassed to admit that I did not do the same with members of my family who served in WWII...) If not, and someone wants help in figuring out how, let me know.

Hi,
I am Andrea from the Philippines, I am a researcher of GMA 7 Philippines TV network.
I am currently searching for a survivor of USS Indianapolis that we can interview for our documentary we are making for I-Witness, GMA7 in Manila Philippines.
Maybe we can conduct the interview through webcam.
