I met a survivor yesterday, May 19, in Clarksville TN. I was getting a sandwich from the local Jersey Mike's. I happened to see USS Indianapolis Survivor on his shirt. As an avid history person, I got my sandwich but I just couldn't leave there without saying something to him & shaking his hand. He was eating with what I assume were some of his family. As I got to his table, he stood up. I said, "Please, sir, don't get up". I knew some things I wanted to say, but when I got over to him, I could only say "thank you sir, thank you sir" and just shake his hand. The rest of the time I just stood there with my mouth open, not able to say anything. He politely stood there and shook my hand and acted like it was no big deal. When I left there, I was shaking. I thought to myself, I just shook the hand of a true American hero! I was so awestruck that it wasn't until I got home that I realized I never even got his name. If he or someone who knows who he might be reads this, I sure would like to know your name, sir. I sure didn't mean to disturb your meal, but I had to let you know there are people out here who appreciate you very much!

I believe the Survivor that you met in Clarksville was Edgar Harrell... What a wonderful and humble man he is!!! He was one of the Marines on board the ship at the time of the sinking. You can go to the following website and learn more about him. He has a fabulous book that I am sure you would enjoy.
