A couple of years ago, my great-uncle Thomas Fred "Fred" Winter, passed. I knew he was an allumnus of BB-34, the "Big Picture" of the New York with its officers and men hangs in my office, but at his memorial service, there was a cap from the Indy. My cousin, a retired NFO, told he got him the hat some time ago and that he had been a crewman before transferring to the New York.
As Uncle Fred was known for embellishment, although straying only far enough to make the story interesting, I've since wondered why I had never heard this part of his career.
That being said, the family story was that Fred never saw action and was on the New York after she saw action. I found his ribbons a few days after he died and found three battle stars on his Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.
So, Is there anyone out there who can tell me, without going the hoo-hah of getting his records (I don't even want to go thru it to get mine!) whether or not he served on the Indy?
Not that it makes a hill of beans as far as the world goes around and I'm not out to discredit my favorite uncle...but one wonders!
I remain...
