It's Vernon C Nordin (Vern) relieved from Indianapolis just prior to its last voyage. My dad passed away yesterday and wondering if there are any good stories out there we can use at his service. We want to have a service at sea just outside the Golden Gate. His cremains will not be released for a week or 2 and service plans are still a work in progress. Please post if you knew my dad.

I am so sorry that I am just reading your post about your father's passing. I am the daughter of a Survivor and I know that the sailors that had gotten off the ship prior to the final voyage were very touched by this tragedy throughout their lives. My father remained friends with one such sailor that had been on the ship for several years and always lived with the thought of how his life may have been changed had he not gotten off. I hope his service went well and was a fitting tribute to one of our nations heroes.

Oops I did the "quick reply" and accidently sent it before I was done. The last sentence was "my dad was Chief Machinist Mate" from approx 1935 to a couple weeks before Indy's fatal voyage. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer and transferred to the Cape Johnson. He was discharged in Sep 1946. He said he lost a lot of friends and couldn't talk about it without his eyes welling up. The services are scheduled this month on the Potomac where he celebrated his 90th birthday five years ago. Thanks again for your post.

Is there a Memorial service planned? If so, I'd like to attend. I am very sorry for you loss. I live in Va and Dad was on the Indy too.
