I am new to this sight and hoping to get information about my father, Charles Thomas Meyer. He was a survivor and I believe he attended several of the very early reunions. He was originally from Marlin, Texas and passed away in 1971 while living in Austin, Texas. My brother Mike has posted on this sight and I believe he has received some information.
When growing up I remember my father keeping this experience very private. When we lived in Waco, Texas I remember a newspaper reporter coming by our house to interview my father about his experience. I believe he was doing a story on the survivors living in Waco at that time but I don't remember the year. My father never talked with the reporter. It was something he would never speak of.
I am interested in not only finding someone who may remember my father but also getting a better understanding of the impact of this tragedy on family members such as myself.

Did he go by the name "Tommy Meyer"? I remember my dad (who is a survivor) having a fellow survivor/friend by that name.

He did go by Tommy. My mother and I were just talking about how he did stay in touch with some of the survivors.

Yes, then that is the Tommy Meyers that my dad was friends with. My dad is from New Orleans, but believe they were friends on board the ship and were in the same division perhaps? There were several other survivors from Texas that my dad also stayed in touch with that I bet knew him as well, but the ones that come to mind are deceased now as well. I will ask my mom & dad more, but I'm not sure how much information I can get from them. My dad suffered a stroke in 1999 and has limited ability to speak, and my mom's memory isn't all the greatest. Although she tends to remember older details better than current events! I'm remembering them talking about some of their survivor friends that passed away young. There was one that had some sort of stomach illness/cancer, and another that was killed in an automobile accident. Was this Tommy by any chance? I may have some photographs from the earlier reunions of them together actually.

Yes, my father died in a car wreck in 1971. I've been talking with my mother about what she remembers as well. She'll tell me she doesn't remember anything and a few minutes later something will pop up. I believe she attended one reunion with my father but I don't know when. She met and married him after he returned and began attending college at North Texas.
