My name is Karen Kenny-Dei and my uncle, Francis Patrick Kenny (AKA Patrick) served and died on the Indianapolis.
A few years back, with the consent of Pat's surviving sisters, I embarked on having a headstone put in the memorial section at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
After paperwork, verification, etc. was complete, the surviving relatives gathered, and we put Pat to rest.
I don't know if the relatives of those lost at see know of this service. There is no charge and it is a military service, conducted by the Navy and included a 21 gun salute.
Pat's 2 sisters were truly touched and comforted, knowing that there is someplace in Michigan that family can come and pay their respect.
Here is the web site to get the forms. I highly recommend anyone who lost someone at sea, apply.

i can't believe that it will be 70 years since the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.

Wonderful idea. Thanks so much for sharing!
The USS Indianapolis Second Watch Organization has also started a program to have flags flown over the USS Indianapolis Memorial in memory of the men lost at sea and sent to the families. If you would like a flag in honor of your uncle, please contact me at USSIndianapolisFamily@gmail.com
