If anyone has information on the following sailor, please feel free to contact me directly at carrie.benson@nisd.net.
I am the great-niece of Frank Buerkholtz Jr, Electrician's Mate, Third Class, who died after the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in July/August 1945. Please see photo below.
Our family knows that he survived the original sinking of the ship and was in the water, and had a back injury. He left the group of men he was with in the water to go find a "crate" of potatoes, but was never seen again. If there is anyone who could help out my family in understanding his fate or at least know of him, please let me know at the above email addresses. Our family has been looking for information since my Grand-Mother started soon after the end of WWII. She was also in Military Service as a Army Nurse. Thank You again!
