A PBS Special was broadcast live last night from the USS Indianapolis at 18,000 ft. The tribute was an actual tour of the ship with the host showing the exact pieces of the vessel and how it went down.
There were interviews and explanations of the two torpedo hits that brought her down with an excellent ships model detailing the entire ship.
I didn't know she carried airplanes on board that could be lifted into the sea by a crane.
The one hour program was amazing and very informative about the last minutes of her sinking. So many men slept on deck in hammocks because it was so hot in cabins.
I hope PBS will re-broadcast the program. It should be available online. Also keep checking your local PBS station to see if it will be broadcast again.
