Hello Hal and George!

Firstly, Hal, I wrote on your profile's whiteboard so please take a look at it when you get the chance.

Secondly, I know it's passed your dad's birthday but please give him a hello from someone who is new to the story of the Indy.  Please let him know that there are people out there who still learn about that terrible night in July are still immensely touched and want to reach out to these brave men.

I salute your father and wish him good health!

Jakub

Hi,
Glad you found the website and joined the forum.   If you would like, please contact me off the board and give me your email address and other contact information.   We have a network of family and friends of the crew and I'd be happy to add you to my list on behalf of your uncle.   We send email updates of news and events.
my email is:  BullardMBullard@aol.com

Be sure to include your father's name as well so I can reference that on the list.

I am an English teacher in Indianapolis, Indiana.  I just finished teaching this book, and would like to know how many survivors are alive today--Apr. 12,2009.

Also, if anyone would like to share the materials I created, i'd be happy to send them to you.  email me at aclarkso@warren.k12.in.us

I was happy to find this site. I have always loved anyone who has served our country and given me the freedoms I have always had; what they say about freedom not being free couldn't be more true! I have family members who served in WWII, but none in the Navy. However the story of the USS Indianapolis has touched me deeply since the first time I heard it, and not just because it was hit and sunk. My father was a college science professor, so I know the risk everyone on that ship took by having the bomb on board with how little they knew about nuclear radiation. Anyway, to those who lost people they loved (friends and family) I am so sorry and so greatful for what they have given all of us. To the families of those who survived but since have passed on please know there are so many people like me who can't even begin to thank them for fighting for us, even those who hadn't been born yet. To any survivors who are still with us I don't think thank you can cover how greatful our Country is to you, I know it is so far from enough for me to say. If there are any survivors who would be willing to become an email pen-pal with me I would love to hear more about you (not just about your time on the US Indianapolis, but about you before and now). Again I can not thank all of you enough, or fully express how much I love and honor each and every person who has or is serving our wonderful Country so that it will stay the best and free Country ever.

I want you to know how greatful I am to your father for serving our country so that I can have the freedoms I enjoy today.  It is so true that freedom isn't free, and I don't think the words thank you can really express how I truly feel for your father and for everyone who has ever served our country.  I know so many veterns don't feel like heros (my family members who served in WWII and Korea didn't feel they were), but I think they define what a true hero is.  So, even though it isn't enough, THANK YOU.

I remember seeing a movie on this as a child. After the movie my mom told me my Grandpa's brother David Stanforth was on the Indi. That movie still haunts me to this day. Years later my Grandpa gave an interview to the local news paper about his time in WWII and a little on his brother. He never liked to talk about that time in his life. I know he knows what happened to his brother on that ship and from what I hear it wasn't a pleasant. I thank everyone on that ship who fought for us and have a heavy heart to all that survived and did not survive that ordeal. God Bless you all!

I am curious how many survivors are still with us today, September 2014. Is there any way to access a list of survivors? I wonder if I could ever meet with one. Does anyone know where to find out? It is sad, but time is running out. I would be honored if I ever could meet one of these men and thank them in person.

Is there any way to send word to any of the survivors? I would simply want to wish them well, & thank them for their service. I am a veteran (U.S. Navy), & had the privilege to serve along side fellow sailors (at sea) as well as members of the U.S.M.C (in the field). As a fresh new member in the U.S.N. we learned of the tragedy that occurred with the USS Indianapolis. I must say it is one of the most terrifying experiences I could imagine ever happening. I notice your username is SurvivorsDaughter if your father is living,  please tell him thank you.

Michael

Sorry for the delay.  I live in Maryland, in Harford County, close to PA.  I just noticed my error in my post, of course I meant 2013.  Only thirty some still alive.  It is sad, but I guess the reality is that most WWII veterans are no longer with us.

God Bless all the survivors. I am 49, but I am just learning the details of the U.S.S Indianapolis all these years later after first hearing about it in the movie Jaws in 1975 when I was 10 years old.

There are now 36 survivors still with us.  13 of them will be at the reunion next week.
