Looking for anyone that remembers my uncle, Richard Day "Red"
Permalink Closed

I am trying to get any info. from a survivor about my uncle, Richard R. Day also known as "Red". He was seen last seen in the water after evacuating the ship. Would love to hear any stories about him since my family has very few. Any memories would be greatly appreciated. He was from the New Orleans area.

My father is a survivor and was a very good friend of Richard's (Red).    I believe they went to boot camp together and were assigned to the USS Indianapolis at the same time as well.  My father also is from New Orleans, but suffered a stroke 9 years ago and although mentally sharp as a tack, he is unable to speak very well.   If you contact me off the board (BullardMBullard@aol,com), I can give you more information that I have from my father and perhaps can arrange for you to meet him.   Your uncle has a very good friend that still lives in New Orleans that my father stays in touch with.   In years past, he stayed in touch with Richard's sister as well, but not so much in recent years.

I can tell you this....not a day has gone by that my father has not remembered your uncle - his friend.   Red was one of the Lost at Sea sailors that I always felt like I knew and associated with, as there was always a soft spot in my father's life for the loss of his friend.  Although lost at such a young age, I can tell you that his memory has surely lived on.
