Looking for Information on my Uncle Daris " Chick " Sackman... USS Indianapolis Crew
Permalink Closed

Hi, I'm new here and looking for any info from survivors or former crew of the " Indy" on my Uncle Daris or Doris "chick" Sackman who served on the USS Arizona up til just shortly before Pearl Harbor, then got out of the Navy to marry his girlfriend who wouldnt marry him while still in the service.  After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was recalled to Navy service and assigned to the USS Indianapolis were he served among other duties as the boat pilot for the Admiral's / Captains launch, up til the crew change at Guam in July of 1945 when he disembarked.

My Uncle "Chick" got his name Doris.... from his mother who wanted a girl and was so ticked she went ahead and gave him the name she had picked... he was teased for it his entire life... probably got in lots of fights too and often spelled his first name as Daris... he went by the nickname Chick and it stuck his whole life. He died in 1989 and the last time I saw him was in 1973 when I was in the 8th grade and too young to know the significance of his service. He is survived by his wife Evelyn and three daughters Joyce 63, Jerri 57 and Lori 45 who I just re connected with yesterday after all these years. Any information at all would be helpful not only to me but my son who eats , sleeps and breaths WW2 history.... Thank You

More on my Uncle "Chick" ( Daris W. Sackman ) This post has been up for over a year now, it's almost hard to believe that there are no Indy survivors or family that visit this page that dont remember him. My Uncle's birthdate was 7/21/1919 and he passed away on 4/25/1989 at the age of 69, due to complications from diabetes. He served aboard USS Indianapolis from early 1942 through the first two legs of her final voyage which left Mares Island in July of 1945, carrying the "bomb" on what was to be a record breaking trip to Hawaii where the Indy picked up new crew and trained them enroute to Tinian , where they dropped off their soon be be airborne to Japan, cargo. The next leg was completed when they sailed over to Guam and all old crew who's enlistments were up or who hadnt re enlisted, got off the ship to be ferried back to the States on the next transports. My uncle was among the crew who got off at Guam... and as everyone knows and little did anyone know, when she sailed out of Guam she would be sunk within hours.

If anyone has any photos with Daris W " Chick" Sackman in them or any other information or documentation, I would be most happy to hear from you as also his three daughters, my cousins would be as well. His wife Evelyn Sackman is still living and is 91 now and living in an assisted living facility in Roseville, California. My e mail is skuyper61@gmail.com or you could do snail mail to PO Box 434, Chester MT 59522. Thank You...
