To A Grandfather I never got to know....SM2 Vincent Fast Horse
Permalink Closed

Hello... Just wanted to post my thoughts to the page...to a grandfather I never got to know.  He was a Seaman 2 (Vincent Fast Horse) on the Indianapolis when she went down.  I've watched the documentarys, researched the internet and so on just I have an idea about him and who he was.  I suppose I've thought mostly about if he had survived only to wait or went when the ship sunk.  My mother, his daughter doesnt remember much about him as she was only a child when he moved on.  Why I keep wondering?  I am named after him... Vincent..  my middle name is Louis... after my fathers father so I am named for both grandfathers... an honor where I come from...I don't suppose anybody would know of SM2 Vincent Fast Horse but thought I would write a few words, thoughts and dreams...  Thank You Grandfather and to you all...I am still proud of you...

Vincent Fast Horse too is my Grandfather, my dad is his oldest son and i seen pictures of my grandpa, and my dad has all his news clippings from the uss indianapolis  and he traveled to the reunion a few times, i named my 21 month old son after my grandfather and my dad, "Vincent" my dad was named after his dad "James Vincent". I know my mother told me that my dad had told her once that he remembers his father leaving for the military when he was only 4 years old he remembers my grandpa holding him just before he had to get on the train to leave for his training and that was the last time he seen him. The pictures i seen of my grandfather and grandmother on my dads side, they were holding my dad and he had to be about a year and a half, and i swear my dad looks like my daughter when she was a baby. lol. I too search the internet for my grandfather. My dad had a memorial for his father some time ago and it was neat and made me think of what a honor it is to be Vincet Fast Horse's grand daughter!

Hello big brother, I think Grandpa Fast Horse would be proud of you and all of us! Including his daughter, Madelyn Rose Fast Horse-Little White Man, she is a courageous, strong, caring and proud mother of all of us. She probably holds many of Grandpa Fast Horse's characteristics, its sad she didnt get to know him, but Im sure he is proud of mom and who she is and has become. Just like I know she is proud of all of us! As we are of her. I love you Grandfather! I love you Mom!smile

Hello, Louie.  My name is Jim Belcher Jr.  I am the oldest son of survivor Jim Belcher, who passed away on May 3rd 2001.  At the 2013 reunion in Indianapolis they plan to honor all the crew on Sunday Aug. 4th during the Memorial Service...by name and if available, a photo.  Could you or a family member post or provide a photo of your Grandfather Vincent that could be used to remember him by?  It would be wonderful to include a photo of him during this ceremony. Thank you for posting about him, and keeping the memory of his life and sacrifice alive. I personally would like to know more about him. And your mother, too. It is obvious from the posts above that he was missed by his family and holds a place of honor in your heart.

Thank You Jim.... SM2 Vincent Fast Horse's daughter, my mother (Madelyn Fast Horse-Littlewhiteman) passed away on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011. I am grateful knowing that they are together at last and enjoying eternal life. There are several of us grandchildren and great-grandchildren that can probably help you with this endeavor. I recently lost my wife last year October 21, 2012 not long after losing my mother so it has been a very tough year for my family. Thank You again Jim.

I am trying to put together photograph of all the men that served on the USS Indianapolis for this year's reunion in August. Would you happen to have a photograph of him from his Navy days in his uniform.  Please email me at savrph7@aol.com.

It would be an honor to have his picture there with all the rest of the men he served with.

Steve

I heard about the reunion and I want grandpa to go with grandma so I can go with them and be there. And be a honor to see grandpa's dad picture with the rest of the crew.

And I saw his picture in his uniform with some other officers all in black and white on the wall. Plus a honor to be his Great Granddaughter JAZsmile
