Passing of USS Indianapolis Survivor Edward Brown, S1

It is with sadness that I sent this news about the passing of USS Indianapolis Survivor Edward J Brown, S1.  
I had the blessing of talking to Ed just yesterday, and he was in good spirits (as always!) and very much at peace.  We talked about the legacy of the USS Indianapolis, and I assured him that we would always carry that legacy with great pride and never let the memories fade.

Ed was a dear friend of mine for the past 15 years. I loved hearing his stories of the USS Indianapolis, which he shared with the students at the school where I work in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a wonderful man and I have retold his story to countless others and will continue to do so. The men of the Indianapolis were heroes and I am proud to have known one of the best, the unsinkable Ed Brown! Love and miss you, Ed!

I am so sorry for the loss of Edward.  I will be praying for you.  May memories comfort you.  When my grandfather passed, I would ask God to tell him that I loved him.  It helped with the pain.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.  If you go to his grave, could you put a flower for me on his grave and give him a salute for me?  I'm in Massachusetts and probably will never get there.

As we enter the New Year, 2012, I fondly recall my friend, Ed Brown. I am honored to have been given a USS Indianapolis 'Still at Sea' coin by Ed and it is a prized possession.

I enjoyed his company immensely and had a photo of us at one of our lunches together specially prepared for framing so that I could recall our talks.

At one of those lunches, we were honored to be joined by Norma Gwinn, the widow of, Lt. Chuck Gwinn, the man who Ed Brown reverently referred to as "Our Angel"

It was a true honor to meet, know and become friends with Ed Brown over the last decade plus of his remarkable life.

One of the last times I saw Ed was at a small, low key reception we held for him on the 65th anniversary of the day the Indy went down.

Our local Rotary Club was proud to support the USS Indianapolis Survivor's Scholarship Fund.
