I inherited picture ink sketch of the USS Indianapolis in which the picture frame is wood from the deck. I believe my mother worked where it was dry docked. My father was supposed to have been on it as a mail clerk but went under the knife ..... hernia operation. He later was on Navy SP on VJ Day. Just trying to get facts as to whether the Indianapolis left US port prior to sinking in 1945 from San Fransisc.. Anyones help will be appreciated for our family DAR records.

July 16, 1945, the fateful mission began. The USS Indianapolis left Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California on a secret mission to deliver atomic bomb components to Tinian Island in the Marianas.
