Introducing myself

Hello,
My name is Amy and my maternal grandfather's brother (Claude Luttrell- which is spelled wrong on the list of crew members) was aboard and lost his life. I never really knew anything about him and had just seen his Navy picture hanging in my grandparents house. I remembered my mother telling me that he was aboard the USS Indianapolis and happened to catch the special on the discovery channel last night. I found it really interesting it ended up doing an interet search and found this forum. I would really be interested in knowing of there is anyone out there at all who survived who knew anything about him?

I just found out from my mother that his last name is spelled correctly. My grandfather's and his sons are all spelled Luttrell. But that is only because when my grandfather was born, the nurse who filled out his birth certificate spelled it wrong so he used that spelling. It was actually supposed to be Luttrull. All of his brothers spelled it different. That must have been odd to all their teachers and doctors. It is so strange to finding that out after all these years. I also found out that at the time the ship departed, there may have been a warrant out for his arrest. That is a family rumor so I'm not sure if it is true. It's amazing the things you can pull out of the family closet when you go digging around.

I am just curious about what really happened on the 'Indianapolis'. I find it shameful that, if it wasn't for the movie 'Jaws', that the fate of so many of America's finest, would have been swept under the rug!

And to what is truly our 'greatest generation'. You will never be forgotten.

I have been aware of the circumstances of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis for quite a few years because of reading several books on the subject and watching the Stacy Keach movie.  It is shameful to the US Navy that it happened at all and even more so about the treatment of Capt McVay.
I spent 21 years in the US Air Force from 1963 through 1984 including 3 tours in Viet Nam.  I have the greatest respect and admiration for all men and women who have served or are serving in the military.  The exception to that is to those who act in self serving conduct such as the treatment of Capt McVay.

That is the movie that sparked my interest in this subject....I was watching tv yesterday afternoon and that very movie came on....I turned to my husband and said "that is some kind of story", and he said "well it is a true story"....I could not believe it!  I did some research last night on the subject and today and could not believe what I was reading.  Its an unbelievable story that these brave men have had to endure all these years....so unbelievably remarkable that they have been able to repeat these stories of what it was like to be on that ship during that time, and have lived through it.  It is bravery, and strength of people like this that renews my faith in this country.  Thanks to each of you...the living and those that have passed, God Bless you all.
