Dear Kim:
I guess by now you have completed your project on Capt. McVay, but I wanted to share some information with you.
There is a movie, "Mission of the Shark: The Saga of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, which you might want to watch.
Shortly after the Court Martial, Capt. McVay had a face-to-face visit with the Commander of the Japanese Submarine which sunk the Indianapolis. Not that much was said during the visit, but one thing the Japanese Commander said to McVay was "it's hard to be a survivor".
I was a Medic in Vietnam and I understand just how hard it is to be a survivor and I'm sure your Grandfather does too.
If your Grandfather is still alive, please tell him thank you for my freedom.

Hello Kim,

I know you posted this over two years ago, and your project on the Indianapolis is long since completed. My name is Ken Roberts, I am the son of Thomas Roberts who was best friends with your grandfather Roger Spencer when they grew up together in Scranton, PA. They both entered World War II together at around the same time and both served in the Navy. I have a letter from your grandfather to my dad which, rather comically at times, details some of his ordeal following the sinking of the Indianapolis and a small picture of your grandfather. It is a letter which clearly illustrates the character of two young men in a time gone by. I would like you to have a copy of it. Please contact me at K.roberts@hlfg.com. I would also like to know if Roger is still with us. My Dad passed on November 16th, 2003. He spoke of his friendship with Roger often and with great fondness for his friend.
