I met a survivor yesterday, May 19, in Clarksville TN. I was getting a sandwich from the local Jersey Mike's. I happened to see USS Indianapolis Survivor on his shirt.
As an avid history person, I got my sandwich but I just couldn't leave there without saying something to him & shaking his hand. He was eating with what I assume were some of his family. As I got to his table, he stood up. I said, "Please, sir, don't get up". I knew some things I wanted to say, but when I got over to him, I could only say "thank you sir, thank you sir" and just shake his hand. The rest of the time I just stood there with my mouth open, not able to say anything. He politely stood there and shook my hand and acted like it was no big deal. When I left there, I was shaking. I thought to myself, I just shook the hand of a true American hero! I was so awestruck that it wasn't until I got home that I realized I never even got his name. If he or someone who knows who he might be reads this, I sure would like to know your name, sir. I sure didn't mean to disturb your meal, but I had to let you know there are people out here who appreciate you very much!
