Hello. I am a navy veteran of three years during the early 1970s. I recently found the book "In Harm's Way" by Doug Stanton while browsing at a local store. I bought it and once I began reading I just could not stop. The story is heart wrenching and many times I found myself feeling very emotional.
The inexcusable delay in finding these men once the Indianapolis went down is ridiculous. It's a national shame that Captain McVay was held accountable when the chain of events that doomed his ship began in the hands of higher military brass before the sailing and carried on for days after the sinking.
To all who survived the ordeal, living and deceased I want to say I as an American am sorry for what you endured. The same message goes out to those who did not survive this tragedy. And I also want to thank you for your patriotic service during that terrible war. My opinion is that had not so many of our brave young men stepped forward to serve that we would be living in a very different world today.
I salute you!

Jeff Weeks
