Librarian seeking book about USS Indianapolis
Permalink Closed

Hi, there. I hope no one minds my posting here for help but I am a library technician in Australia trying to track down a book for my uncle and have so far had no luck identifying it. He has read the book once before a long time ago but says that he lent it to someone that he is now out of contact with and never got it back. He is very keen to read it again but can no longer remember the title or author.

My uncle says that the book focuses largely on sharks - incorrect information that may have been given to those onboard about sharks and also actual facts about them. He believes that the book may have been written by a survivor.

If anyone knows the possible title, author, ISBN, or current state of availability we would really appreciate it.

Regards,

Rebecca

Always good to hear from our friends down under. You didnt give us much to go on, but you said your uncle read this book a long time ago. How long ago? A few years, or many many years?

The first book that told the USS Indianapolis story was, "Abandon Ship" by Richard F. Newcomb first published in 1958, and again in 2001 (Harper Collins).

There have been several other books written as well in recent years. I am a survivors son. I would be happy to provide you with any information I have on the Indy.

I am the author of "60 Yeats Later."It is a book that features the story of William Van Wilpe, a hero that, single handedly, probably rescued more survivors than anyone involved in the rescue.    The isbn # is 978-1-4327-1831-2

He was a sailor on the USS Bassett.  The Bassett saved the majority of the survivors.  Van Wilpe dove into shark infested waters to swim to and rescue the survivors.  He dove in off his Higgins Boat because the rescuers had great difficulty pulling the survivors into the boats because of rough, oil covered seas and the survivors were far too weak, and in some cases, delerious to help themselves.  60 Years Later is a fascinating "story within a story."
