Need Assistance in Identifying the Recovered Unknowns
Permalink Closed

Good afternoon all,

As a matter of introduction, I recently served as the Deputy Chief of the World War II Research and Investigation Branch at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) at Pearl Harbor and was the primary investigator assigned to the cases of American servicemen listed as MIA or "Unresolved" from the Battle of Tarawa, the USS West Virginia, the USS California, and several other battles/loss incidents. I developed an extensive computer database to develop multiple statistical and historical datasets on missing casualties from these actions that remain in an "Unresolved" status in the JPAC Intelligence Directorate database.

After my tour of duty with JPAC ended, my non-profit family charitable foundation decided to continue the efforts to help recover and identify MIAs from World War II, including a considerable number of "unknowns" who were recovered after the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and were buried at sea.  If successful in the investigative identification process for some of these "unknowns", the goal is officially provide the U.S. government of the information so that  final closure for some of the families of the Indy crew can be provided.

I would like to seek the assistance of former crew members who could answer some specific questions about some of these unknowns who left behind some intriguing clues to their identity but they would likely only mean something to those who may have known them on board the ship.

At the present time, I also need assistance in locating the ship's division rosters which would indicate who was assigned to each specific division on board the Indy at the time of her loss.

Thank you,
