I have recently found a copy of Abandon Ship in the belongings of my grandfather Russell L Brandt who was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. I have read the book as well as others pertaining to the wonderful ship and tragic events that followed. What makes this copy special is that it is signed and dated by many of the survivors as well as Captain McVay, Wilbur Gwinnett,Adrian Marks, the author Richard Newcomb and many more. I was not aware that this was in my possession as I my father only trusted these belongings a year ago. most of the signatures are dated July 29, 1960. what a amazing surprise this has been.

Sounds like that was from the 1st Survivors Reunion in 1960 - the 15th Anniversary of the sinking. What a treasure! If you are on Facebook, please look for the "USS Indianapolis CA-35 Second Watch Organization" page. We are a group of children, grandchildren, families and friends of the final sailing crew. Lots of good information and articles posted on the page. I think you'd enjoy it. Quite an amazing legacy we share!
